This is a classic tale of a rapper that should not quit his day job. Once upon a time, someone told ASAP Rock he was fashionable and trendy. The Coveteur decided to interview him, and compliment him on his clear skin (he washes he face..yay!). Somewhere in between boring me with his witch-hazel regimen and talking about how dirt makes black people’s hair grow, ASAP decided that he would give the ladies a little advice on makeup. And it goes a little something like this:
But for real, for me, I feel like with the red lipstick thing it all depends on the pair of complexion. I’m just being for real. You have to be fair skinned to get away with that. Just like if you were to wear like—f*cking for instance, what do dark skin girls have that you know fair skinned girls cant do… Purple lipstick? Naw, that looks stupid on all girls! Purple lipstick, guys! Like, what the f*ck…
I have a problem in general with men and their entitlement to women. I hear men say all the time that they can’t stand women that wear makeup, they prefer the natural look. I get it. If a woman wants to conform to the aesthetic needs of a man, that is her business. I am all about self-expression and individualism. I believe that the face has the potential to be a great canvas of possibilities. At the same time, if makeup is not your thing I respect that, but is it your decision? ASAP should really stay in a man’s place, doing manly things like calling us bitches and arguing with other men. It just seems so fun. Don’t waste your time playing into the boring game of colorism, telling dark-skinned women what they cannot do. If you feel that dark-skinned women cannot wear red lipstick and it bothers you that much, look the other way.
My dark skin sistas don’t be discouraged. This man thinks dirt and grease makes your hair grow.
To prevent this story from being totally unproductive, here’s a few tips on how to rock red lips. It’s not just for fair-skinned women!
